Grand National Roadster Show 2013

Here is proof that some things do get better with age.  Unisteer attend the 64th annual Grand National Roadster Show on January 25th-27th.  Although it was only our second time at the show it proved to be another fabulous experience.  Despite the rainy conditions for most of the weekend, the crowd still showed up in herds.  Nothing makes booth personnel happier than little down time.

With Friday’s show hours ending at 8:00pm, this allowed for the after work crowd to get some quality gawking time at the show before closing.  This further entices them to come back the next day to see if they have missed anything.  With a total of 9 buildings full of cars and car related items there was plenty to see all weekend long.  Every building is loaded front to back with great cars from The Legendary  to The Obscure.  From nose up gassers to frame dragging low riders. There is even something for the two wheeled fans as well, having half a building dedicated to motorcycles of all kinds.  William Harley, Arthur Davidson and Hideo “Pops” Yoshimura would have been envious of the collection

Exhibitors get an extra hour before the show starts to…well…I don’t know what other exhibitors do but we use this time to do our own gawking.  Looking at the vehicles, both customs and full original restorations instills the passion people have for this “hobby”.  The attention to the finest detail is mind shattering.  It is quiet easy to look at a vehicle multiple times and see something new every time.  We were lucky to have three amazing cars across from us.  A lime green ’32, a blue ’57 Bel-Aire with at least seven different shades of blue, and a brilliant red ’33.

After all was said and done, getting out of snowy Ohio in January and heading to rainy Southern California is always nice.  The only real downer is the trip back with a flight leaving at 6:00 in the morning.  I guess we all have our penance to pay, and if getting up at 3:00 in the morning to catch a flight is the payment owed for looking at some truly amazing cars, trucks, and motorcycles then consider payment still owed.

U-joint fits loose

Most of our polished stainless steel u-joints are clamped down by pinch bolts. These sometimes take more then 45 ft lbs of torque to tighten them down. You can torque these pinch bolts down to as much as 45 ft lbs if necessary to tighten the joint. Our u-joints are strong and will not break. They provide the maximum angle of operation at about 38 degrees. http://www.unisteer.com/u-joints.html

Mopar A Body

We make a kit for Mopar B bodies and Mopar E bodies. We do not make a Mopar A body kit. These cars are not made to have a rack in them. A whole new front clip is the best way to put rack & pinion on these cars. These clips can be purchased at many chassis shops. Our B/E body kits fit K-frames from 1968-74. http://www.unisteer.com/search_by_product/bolt_in_rack_pinions/mopar.html

Question for Kit 8011080-01 Camaro 75-81

Will this kit, (8011080-01) provide the stock turning radius and allow full alignment adjustments as the OEM steering system for my 1979 Camaro ?

The 8011080-01 kit for the 75-81 Camaro is made specifically for these cars and will travel out to the factory stops. This Camaro rack and pinion has full alignment adjustments that are easily made by unloosening the outer end and by just turning the inner end in or out. (Brandon)

Can I rely on your technical support system while installing this product ?

Our technical support center is open 8-5 EST Mon-Fri at 800-338-9080. (Brandon)

Will I be able to buy replacement/rebuild parts for this R&P unit later down the road ?

Unisteer's parent company Maval Manufacturing has been in the steering business since 1987. All products will always be able to be repaired and individual parts can be purchased seperately. (Brandon)

Rack Rotation

All rack and pinions have rack rotation. This keeps the rack from binding. On our center-take-off racks the rack rotation may seem like a lot at the end of the center-take-off bar but it is still the same amount at the rack as any other rack and pinion. Here is a picture of what a center-take-off rack looks like. There is a large boot in the center of the rack with a bar coming out of the middle. Then the tie rod ends come off of that center bar.

How to Introduce Power Steering Fluid to your Pump

Although it sounds basic, surprisingly the most common question we receive is how you can best introduce power steering fluid to your pump. So straight from our experts, here is a sure-fire way you can ensure fluid motion is working correctly:

  1. Pour power steering fluid into pump reservoir (prior to starting the car). Use real power steering fluid since brake fluid is not a sufficient substitute.
  2. Start the car with a friend that can pour more power steering fluid while you SLOWLY turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and then all the way to the left. Keep SLOWLY turning the wheel back and forth while your friend adds more steering fluid until reservoir is properly filled.
  3. Tighten the cap on the reservoir and hit the road.

The new style manual Mustang rack and pinion kits and all of the power Mustang rack & pinion kits use the same column connection and the same column modification. The new manual Mustang rack part numbers consist of 8001090-01, 8001110-01, and 8001120-01. These are center take off racks. The old kits have end take off racks.

Both of the 60-65 Falcon rack and pinion kits come with a new steering column shaft, but they are both slightly different from each other.

The new manual Mustang kits, power Mustang kits, and the manual 60-65 Falcon kits will fit with nearly any header.  Most headers will fit with the 60-65 power Falcon kit.
